Katie sat quietly in the dark kitchen as the microwave whirred away. It felt like a clock, counting down the seconds to her doom. Katie didn’t really know what to expect. She couldn’t believe that her best friend was doing this to her. She wasn’t even sure it was actually going to work. But Katie knew that she couldn’t put it off forever. She had to get it over with. Either it was all a lie -- or her life was about to change.
The microwave pinged. It was a bell, tolling Katie’s fate. She opened it and pulled out the plate. She put the burger on a bun and sat back down at the table. For a moment she just stared at the hamburger.
Then she started to laugh.
The whole thing was ridiculous. There was no way that anything could possibly happen. She was being stupid, afraid of a little hamburger. Laughing, and with tears pouring down her cheeks, Katie took a bite.
