Let's focus on one town, shall we? This particular one was in Iowa and, like the rest of the world, everyone there would have a major life change.
People were just going about their normal day when suddenly what came to be known as The Gender Switch happened.
All males became female and all females became male. Sexual orientation did not change. So gay men became lesbians, and vice versa. And straight men became straight women, and vice versa. Anyone who was not considered to be specifically male or female (shemales, for instance) didn't change.

"Congratulations, it's a boy," the doctor said to the woman, who for the last several hours was in labor. He held up the baby and smiled. Then it happened.
"Can I hold him?" the man lying before the doctor asked, his hands out.
"What ... how ..." the doctor stuttered, then stopped completely. What happened to the doctor's voice. "My voice. I sound like a woman."
"And I sound like a man," said the man, with eyes wide. He turned and looked towards the woman standing next to him and saw that the woman was as bewildered as they were, touching herself.
"I ... I'm a woman," the woman said.
The doctor handed the baby to the man so that she could check her own body. She didn't just have the voice of a woman. She also had the body of one!
"Doctor," the man said. "I thought you said my baby was a boy. This is a girl."
All three adults just stopped and tried to comprehend what just happened. The male doctor had become the female version of himself. The woman having the baby had become the male version of herself. The woman's husband had become the female version of himself. And the baby had switched from a baby boy to a baby girl.
Unknown to them, as of yet, everyone else in the hospital, town, state, the whole world, had a similar change in gender.
