The little plastic thing that had been billed as a Level Upper didn't have any screws on it, but after a very close look, Uiharu found a very fine seam. It probably would have been impossible to open with regular tools, but Academy City was full of extremely delicate devices to the point that even an ordinary toolbox came with at least a few items suitable to micron-level precision work. And while Uiharu wasn't the sort to make a big deal out of it, and may have in fact been unaware of just how amazing she was, she was the systems administrator for Branch 177. Quite out of proportion to their lowly position within the organization, this was the branch out of anywhere in Judgement that had the highest security... specifically because Uiharu was the admin there.
All appearances to the contrary, her tools were anything but ordinary. She was able to slip an ordinary-looking micro-screwdriver through an all but invisible seam, and trigger a catch within that gave no visible indication that it even existed.
She was rewarded with a cloud of glittering dust, which exploded out of the opened casing and covered both herself and Saten all over their bodies. The two girls stood up, and backed away from the table, coughing as the breathed in the cloud.
The dust cleared after a few moments, leaving the two girls and the table covered in a thin film of glitter. There was an almost supernatural tension in the air... between the two of them, there was an unspoken certainty that one of them had to do something.
In fact, the Level Upper they had been examining was a genuine article. It simply wasn't the same sort as the one they'd encountered in the past. And stranger yet, it was still functional. The casing and button were only there to contain the workings of the Level Upper and allow the target activity to be specified. Now that it had been opened up, it was very likely that they would both begin unknowingly increasing their skills at whatever they happened to do next.
