Understanding does not come easily. Many know facts and figures, but few properly understand what they mean. The two concepts are very different. After all, there is quite a lot between merely reciting memorised text and being able to apply it where and when it would be useful.
That is not to say that the two are completely seperate concepts. Quite the opposite, in point of fact. It is difficult to understand something that one cannot know, after all. Perhaps an easy way to explain the difference best is to say that knowledge is the first step towards wisdom, while understanding is the next step as it leads towards creating new knowledge for oneself.
Whatever the case, Akane wished that she understood Ranma. Not an entirely easy task as the boy is rather secretive about his past until it comes back to bite him square on the rear end. Still, she does know him pretty well by this point. The trouble is in understanding him, figuring out how his mind works, predicting what he'll do next, why he behaves in a certain way now.
There were a couple of ways that Akane could learn about him. The question is, which one does the rock intend to use?
