"Why?" Jim wanted to know. "What's so special about me and Sharon?"

"As I told you, you and Ms McCormack - or at least your various analogies - seem to be constants in all of this. The best way that I can put it is that, across all the Alts that we have been able to get information from, you and your girlfriend seem to act as what I can best describe as magnets for the weird. Strange things are always happening to the two of you. We feel that finding out why may tell us an awful lot."

"So what do you want us to do?"

1. *"First we need you to talk to Ms McCormack for us and persuade her to co-operate."
2. "We want to rig up the two of you with miniature cameras, microphones and brain-wave monitors, so that we can follow everything that happens to you."
3. "We want you both to move into our headquarters so that we can keep you under observation at all times."
4. "One of our scientists has discovered an elementary particle which he had named the 'Weirdon'. Most people are wholly unaffected by them, but we hypothesise that you and your girlfriend might be different. We would like to bombard the two of you with Weirdons and see what happens."
