The doctor and his nurses helped put Sean onto a birthing table. There were places for him to put his legs, in order to make sure that they stayed spread open wide. "I can't believe this is really happening. I can't believe I'm going to give birth!" Sean said, watching as his belly continued to slowly grow larger.
"I don't suppose you're familiar with the Lamaze method?" the doctor asked Sean.
"Well, uh, I've heard about it," Sean replied. "That's where you breathe in that funny way, right?"
"Sort of," the doctor agreed. "I'll have the nurse explain it to you."
Quickly, the nurse went through some incredibly brief instructions, explaining to Sean what he should do at various parts of the birth process and Sean practiced as much as he could before the doctor came back and said, "It won't be long now. You're about the equivalent of nine months pregnant or more now, so any minute now..."
And then Sean's water broke. He could feel the contractions beginning, happening much faster than would be normal, not that he knew exactly what normal would be. And then Sean was being told to breathe and to push, and he did what he was told, and it seemed to take forever. It was tiring and painful. And finally, the baby was delivered.
"It's a boy!" the doctor told Sean. But Sean could tell it wasn't over yet.
"What's going on? Why isn't it over?" he asked.
"Looks like you're having twins," a joyful nurse told him.
"No!" Sean yelled, and then he had to go through it all over again as he slowly gave birth to a second baby.
"It's a girl," the doctor told him.
"Thank goodness, that's over," Sean sighed, finally relaxing.
